If you’re replacing a floor in Boston or anywhere in Lincolnshire, two names come up again and again: LVT and laminate. They can look similar, but they’re made differently and suit different rooms. Here’s a plain-English guide.

What is LVT?

LVT stands for luxury vinyl tile. It’s a layered vinyl floor with a printed top layer that looks like real wood or stone, and a tough wear layer on top. It comes in planks and tiles, including herringbone patterns.

Best for: kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and hallways.

  • Highly water-resistant, so spills and splashes aren’t a worry
  • Warmer and softer underfoot than tiles
  • Quieter to walk on than laminate
  • Can be laid in eye-catching patterns like herringbone

What is laminate?

Laminate is made from a fibreboard core with a photo layer of wood on top, sealed under a hard, clear coating. It’s a popular, budget-friendly way to get a wood look.

Best for: living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms and home offices.

  • Very scratch-resistant, which is great with pets and kids
  • Usually lower in cost than LVT
  • Realistic wood effects
  • Many ranges have improved water resistance, but most are best kept away from very wet areas

Quick comparison

LVT Laminate

Our advice

Many homes use both: LVT in the kitchen, bathroom and hallway, and laminate or carpet in the living areas and bedrooms. If you’re having a new kitchen fitted, it’s the perfect time to do the floor too.
